For Beth’s photoshoot I was looking for a palate that referenced the self portraits that Rembrandt painted over his life time. We worked with brushes & quills symbolizing the tools of a working artist. While Beth’s final portrait does not feature these artifacts, it does utilize classic Rembrandt lighting. The left side is in light while the right side is in shadow with a small triangle of light on the cheek and catch lights in both eyes. But it is the direct reference to Albert Dürer’s self portrait that makes it a such a compelling image.
