Jacques heard about our portrait project from a mutual friend in St. Paul. He has been to Brisbane many times over the years. Not just when he performed at Live at Mission Blue, but often to give advanced lessons to musicians as they prepared for careers on concert hall stages. I was thrilled that he would make a stop here en route from his home in the Netherlands to performances in St. Paul. In preparation for his photo I looked to paintings by Hans Holbein. Holbein used backgrounds of lush-colored fabric as a compositional anchor. And he incorporated artifacts that spoke to the life of the subject. In Jacques’ portrait we added a bowl of cherries, a reference to 17th century Dutch still life painting as well as the ubiquitous cherries incorporated into Flemish harpsichord soundboard paintings. Jacques is pointing to a book of illustrations by the Flemish illustrator Joris Hoefnagel which are open to the pages illustrating the letter I which was interchangeable with J and O.
