The photo shoot with Clair & Karen was a pivotal moment in my learning curve. At the time Claire was an experienced model working in Tokyo and knew instinctively how to work in front of a camera. It seemed as though I could not take a bad picture. Dressed in her Grandmothers wedding dress and a hat borrowed from Ruth Sofaer-Morse’s collection, she was poised and beautiful, projecting images reminiscent of late 19th century painters like Renoir and Sargent. The experience of photographing Claire & Karen also made me aware of the range of comfort that people experience in front of a lens. I learned the importance of putting people at ease and the impact that has on the images taken.
